Vinohrady

HomePrague Tourist Information › Vinohrady

Prague’s TV and radio tower Prague’s TV and radio tower

The name Vinohrady means “vineyards” and from the reign of Charles IV, the area was covered with vineyards after the king had them planted by royal order. The vineyards lasted for about 400 years before being replaced by rose gardens, orchards and finally, residential buildings. The district is easily reached by walking from the top of Wenceslas Square, past the Museum and uphill on Vinohradska Street, the main drag of the neighborhood.

Now Vinohrady is one of the most elegant and beautiful residential areas in Prague. There are hundreds of Neo-Renaissance, Art Nouveau, pseudo Baroque and Neo-Gothic buildings in the neighborhood. Most were built in the latter half of the 19th century and the early part of the 20th century. As a consequence, the apartments in these buildings are large, airy and very comfortable.

Our Luzicka Apartment is in the heart of Vinohrady, just up from Namesti Miru, location of the Church of St. Ludmila. In front of the church is a lovely little park with plenty of benches for hanging around on. During the Christmas or Easter holidays, a fair opens up in the park and one can purchase plenty of knick knacks for gifts.

One of the most attractive things about Vinohrady now, though, are the large variety of restaurants scattered throughout the neighborhood. If you are staying in our Luzicka Apartment, there are a variety of good restuarnts down on Namesti Miru. If you are staying in our Spanelska Apartment, a quick stroll up Manesova street yields a plethora of excellent dining opportunities. And best of all, these restaurants are frequented by local Czech people, so prices are reasonable and the food is excellent.

Vinohrady also affords one of the best views of Prague from the monolithic Television Tower, the spaceship that dominates the horizon from anywhere in town. Now adorned with Artist David Cerny’s small babies, the tower is something of a weird cultural attraction. If you have a chance, definitely make the time to take the elevator up to the top and enjoy the view.
