Originally called the Alley of Gold, this row of 11 very small houses is glued to the outer walls of the Prague Castle. Castle guards and later goldsmiths lived here. To get up to the Golden Lane from any of our Mala Strana Apartments, Prokopska, Vlasska or even Kampa is a 20 minute uphill walk or a 10 minute tram ride. The lane is remarkable because the houses really are very small. To wander into any of these houses will enable you to conceptualize just how small people were back in the medieval days. It’s amazing what good eating has done for the modern man’s height.
There is now a fee charged to wander down the Golden Lane, but if you purchase a general entrance ticket to all the attractions in the Prague Castle, it won’t be a big deal. There are a variety of shops now in the small houses along with an armory museum and a bunch of souvenir shops.
At the bottom of the lane is a tower called Daliborka. The round tower was part of the Prague Castle fortifications and the bottom floor was used as a prison.
Try to get here at the beginning or end of your day it’s really very crowded during peak tourist season during the day. If you’re already tired from wandering around, come back and see it another day, the crowds will definitely put you off.
